Twitterview with Maranatha Wilson

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to Twitterview with @WCCO’s very own @humideye as the guest. Lets get to Tweet’n. :)

@humideye – Cool! I’m ready… and I pre-apologize for any misspellings

Q – #1   To start off with @humideye – Where did you grow up? Explain briefly your life from you HS graduation up until today.

A:   grew up in plymouth MN, went to wayzata HS /decided to go to @MCAD when I was about 25 and got my BFA in Graphic design

LOVED @MCAD such a great school – I graduated in 2006 and have been working @wcco ever since :)

I was your typical artsy kid with learning disabilities that really was mainly good at creative stuff / visual stuff

worked as a “designer” before starting @MCAD but knew that I didn’t really know what I was doing…

The design that I did looked ok / but “off” – I already knew the programs pretty well… so I learned pretty fast @MCAD

Q – #2   @humideye – What got you interested in graphic design, and did you think you’d use it for TV?

A:   The TV thing was not planned & random!… I took one Motion Graphics class while at mcad and FELL IN LOVE with it…

…@wcco called me after seeing my work online and asked me to come in for an interview…

…then there was some leg wrestling in the creative department and I fell in love :) the rest is history… :) #

…after working @wcco for about a year I was asked to teach a motion class @mcad (teaching is my new passion)

Q – #3   Awesome! @humideye – So what kinds of projects do you get to do? Any examples that we might have seen?

A:   Totally – here are some examples: this is one of the first projects I got to help with http://vimeo.com/12192935

…Franks mom was SO FREAKING CUTE… I worked with Raul Cadena on that last one… http://vimeo.com/7728740

… http://vimeo.com/6186033 <- This one was for the state fair last year – I did all of the design for “WE POWER”

I also get to do a lot of print work with something like the state fair: tshirts, signage, etc… http://bit.ly/ckj10D

I also had the privilege of working on The Wire for WCCO -> http://bit.ly/aZSdG3

Q – #4   Do you do any weather graphics? Can you get mauve & canary yellow added? :) What do you like most about your job?

A:   I did do some work for the weather graphics! look for the tiny clouds / sun’s / lighting & rain… those were mine!

I also do (as we all get to do) “production graphics” or short use daily graphics… not as fun but IMPORTANT :)

LOL! I def not mauve & canary! I DO know CBS corporate would have a problem with how I describe their graphics ;)

Q – #5   So you are obviously on Twitter, how has that helped you professionally & personally to use it?

A:   I LOVE TWITTER… Still getting used to it though. I was a true “hatter” in the beginning…

@ericamayer helped me see the twitter beacon of light… I think it’s imperative as a designer / creative to be on it

I’m always trying to get students to use it… some of them have with great success. My own success on twitter has…

…been in the area of freelance & finding out about other interesting people and project like @ARTCRANK

…there is a new world / a great community of contacts & and creatives on twitter!! It’s wonderful…

Q – #6   Now that you LOVE Twitter, who are 5-10 people that you follow that educate, entertain or humor you?

A:   some of my FAVORITE twitter peps are of course @ericamayer – she is such a blast & inspiration…

A few that happen to be former students of mine are: @JollyOlChap @josephrueter @juliananagan

I love following these amazingly creative peps too: @adamgarcia @lifterbaron @ghubacek @hapticdata @LovelyMpls

There are so many…!! It’s hard to choose – Here are a few more: @espiekermann @the_nerdery @vimeo @motionographer

Q – #7   Now the FAVS questions: Favorite – Restaurant, store, summer activity and least favorite class in school?

A:   I’ll go backwards: I cant pick a fav class (all were awesome) but my 2 fav professors: Jan Jancourt & @frenchylunning

Fav Restaurant? Right now? BY FAR it’s the @RedStagNE – OMG so so so so so so good. Great happy hour too!

Fav store? I LOVE @hello_robotlove – If you haven’t checked them out – you don’t know what your missing.

summer activity? that’s a tough one… Since I’m a designer & ALWAYS busy I only get a chance to wonder outside…

once in a while… I’m a patio nerd/any restaurant that has a patio/ MPLS summertime = patio seating & a glass of wine!

Q – #8   Before the hour is up w/@humideye – What final thought or mantra would you like to share with everyone?

A:   Final thoughts: Good design can make you more money . . . and save the world / but not in that order.

lol! NO good design really can save the world!! designers are thinkers & problem solvers. Put them to work on…

…big problems & they will always come up with a new & better solution! :) besides, we love a challenge & never sleep

@JoelECarlson – Everybody have a great evening and be sure to follow Twitterview tomorrow when the guest will be @Footenotes at 11am CDT.

@humideye – Thanks SO SO much – this has been super fun!

@humideye – … just noticed one question said “least favorite class in school” – that would have to be MATH (math you are evil)
